“Yin”
Description:
The First Quarter Moon appears one week after the New Moon, dividing its surface into equal parts light and shadow. This balanced phase echoes the Yin–Yang idea of opposing forces working together: the moon’s quiet, cyclical reminder of harmony between night and day.
Story:
The moon hangs between light and darkness in this First Quarter phase, its surface divided by the terminator line. I photographed it just after sunset on the Oregon coast, when the sky was deep enough to reveal detail yet still held traces of day.
The First Quarter Moon has long been compared to half of the Yin–Yang symbol — a visual expression of nature’s dualism in Taoist thought. Yin and Yang literally translate to “moon” and “sun”, two forces that shape not only our calendars but our sense of rhythm and balance.
About seven days after each New Moon, this phase returns as a quiet reminder of our place within the cycles of the cosmos.
