Something about this tree had caught my eye.
The shape: full of character.
It’s size; far greater than anything near it.

Description:
This Sitka spruce tree is located in Sitka Sedge State Natural Area outside of Tierra Del Mar, Oregon. Opened to the public in 2018, Sitka Sedge is a former dairy farm transformed into 357 acres of protected coastline, where marsh, dunes, and forest blend into a thriving, diverse habitat.
Story:
Resembling a royal crown, this Sitka spruce rests within a quiet grove just off the beaten path.
Sitka Sedge State Natural Area is a welcome addition to the northern Oregon Coast. Close to Pacific City, my home on the coast, I come here often for trail running. The trails are free of roots and easy on the knees.
And the trail system is extensive. Beyond the official paths are offshoots — deer trails that beckon the curious. It was during one of my runs that I followed one of these narrow tracks into the forest and discovered this stately tree.
I didn’t have my camera with me, but I could already see the photograph: late-afternoon light drifting through the canopy, catching the edges of the moss and accentuating the curves of the branches as the tree rose above the rest — sage-like, ancient, and full of wisdom.
