“Winter’s Reserve”

Description:
This winter photograph from the western slope of Tumalo Mountain in Central Oregon overlooks South Sister, Middle Sister, and Broken Top framed by snow- and ice-laden firs. Adjacent to Mount Bachelor and easily accessed from the Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway, Tumalo Mountain offers permit-free, year-round views of the Three Sisters Wilderness.

Story:
Viewed from the western slope of Tumalo Mountain just before sunset, the volcanic peaks of the Three Sisters Wilderness were covered in untouched snow.

Photographed during the same evening as “Crooked Cold,” I was struck by the immediacy of the glowing, slumbering volcanoes and switched lenses for a closer perspective. From what I could see then — and still see now — there is no trace of human presence anywhere in this scene.

Snowmobiles are banned in the Three Sisters Wilderness, and only the most determined adventurers travel this terrain in winter.

From left to right: South Sister, Middle Sister, and Broken Top. (A narrow glimpse of North Sister appears just left of Broken Top.)

Pristine Central Oregon Cascades. Winter’s reserve.
