“Willamette Cherry”

Description:
Cherry trees line the Willamette River waterfront in downtown Portland as part of the Japanese American Historical Plaza, dedicated in 1990. The blossoms bloom each spring, honoring Japanese American history while framing views of the river, bridges, and the city’s central eastside.

Story:
Park lamps illuminate full bloomed cherry blossoms along Portland’s waterfront during dawn on an overcast spring day.

My location for taking this photograph was lower than everyone else that morning. I was on a platform where the staircase leading from the park to the Steel Bridge made a 90-degree turn.

This platform allowed me to be closer to the tops of the cherry trees but also put me closer to a group of homeless underneath the bridge. I was very aware of my surroundings.

Shortly after this photograph, my instincts told me to move back up the stairs to the safety of numbers. And no sooner had I moved did some run up the stairs to where I was and yelled obscenities. Directed at me? I’m not quite sure. I think they were on drugs.

The cherry blossoms of Portland, Oregon along the waterfront are beautiful and are there as a memorial to Japanese immigrants. While lovely to photograph, Portland is certainly not the stress-free and natural environment of a National Park or Forest.
