“Vista House (Fog)”
Description:
Venturing east from Portland, Vista House at Crown Point stands as the Gateway to the Columbia River Gorge. Built between 1913 and 1922, the octagonal structure rises 733 feet above the Columbia River and provides sweeping views into the Gorge. Just 30 minutes from Portland International Airport, it remains a popular year-round destination.
Story:
Sunrise from Chanticleer Point revealed a fog-layered view of Vista House and the Columbia River Gorge. I arrived hoping the clouds would catch bright pink light, but they never did. instead a surge of fog formed behind me and swept into the Gorge with surprising speed.
Within seconds the landscape kept changing—fog rising, falling, and drifting across the cliffs. One moment the trees were visible, the next they vanished. Vista House appeared and disappeared in cycles as waves of fog moved over the ridge and down toward the river.
Composing the photograph became an exercise in timing. Nothing stayed still long enough to predict. The fog dictated everything, shaping the scene second by second.
The fog was the conductor.
