“Vista House (Autumn) (2)”

Description:
Venturing east from Portland, Vista House at Crown Point stands as the Gateway to the Columbia River Gorge. Built between 1913 and 1922, the octagonal structure rises 733 feet above the Columbia River and provides sweeping views into the Gorge. Just 30 minutes from Portland International Airport, it remains a popular year-round destination.

Story:
Peak autumn color had settled over Crown Point on an overcast October morning. The big leaf maples climbing the cliffs below Vista House reminded me of Rapunzel’s hair cascading from a tower — golden strands sweeping down the rock face toward the river.

What began as a promising sunrise quickly faded behind clouds, and most of the photographers cleared out in disappointment. But the muted sky added something they didn’t wait to see: a layered backdrop of soft fog and distant ridges, giving the Gorge a quiet sense of depth and mystery.

The light never broke, but the story did.
“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair.”
