“Upper South Falls”
Description:
Located along the Trail of Ten Falls in Silver Falls State Park, Upper South Falls is one of four waterfalls where the trail passes directly behind the cascade. Photographed here during peak autumn color, this 177-foot waterfall is among the tallest in the park and a highlight of the loop.
Story:
Upper South Falls plunges over a basalt shelf and crashes into its pool below during Oregon’s autumn season.
Arriving on an overcast weekday, I was surprised by how many visitors filled the park. As the first major waterfall on the Trail of Ten Falls — and fully wheelchair accessible — it’s also the busiest. Looking for a moment of quiet, I chose a vantage point along a side section of the trail instead of joining the line of people walking behind the falls for photos and selfies.
With my tripod set up, I waited for the right moment when the view cleared. I didn’t mind the pause; the fall colors were excellent, and everyone I crossed paths with seemed grateful to be outdoors that afternoon. So was I.
