“Universe Beach”

Description:
Pacific City is a quiet coastal town famous for its dory fleet, Cape Kiwanda’s sandstone formations, and the prominent Haystack Rock offshore. On clear nights, this stretch of beach offers impressive stargazing. Reflections in the wet shoreline often enhance the sense of standing between sea, sky, and the open Pacific.

Story:
The night sky comes to life along the Oregon coast at Pacific City.

The timing for this photograph was incredibly fortunate. A car drove onto the beach and parked behind and to the right of me. Its headlights stayed on while the occupants unloaded supplies to set up a campfire.

Using a long shutter speed (25 seconds) to capture the stars — far more than you can see with the naked eye — the car’s headlights unintentionally acted like off-camera lighting and perfectly illuminated the landscape.

But!

If those headlights had stayed on for the full 25 seconds, the entire scene would have blown out. Timing was absolutely essential to getting this exposure right.

Very lucky! Especially considering that driving on his section of the beach became off-limits to everyone except dory fishermen starting in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and has remained that way.

With the stars mirrored in the shoreline and fishing boats dotting the horizon, the beach felt transformed into “Universe Beach.”
