“Triptych View”
Description:
A view of San Francisco’s skyline from the top of Coit Tower, where Salesforce Tower, the Transamerica Pyramid, and 555 California Street align perfectly within the tower’s arched windows. Completed in 1933, Coit Tower offers one of the city’s most iconic panoramas.
Story:
From left to right: Salesforce Tower, the Transamerica Pyramid, and 555 California Street.
I was about to head back down from the top of Coit Tower when a docent, noticing my camera, asked if I’d taken a photograph through the open window. I hadn’t. He told me to take a closer look — “You’ll see something fun,” he said.
He was right. Each of the three skyscrapers lined up neatly inside its own arch, like the city had arranged itself for a portrait. The docent also mentioned that the tower’s windows are almost never open. That sealed it. I set up quickly, knowing this was one of those small gifts a city occasionally gives you.
Late October light filled the room, crisp and fogless, giving the skyline a clarity that felt almost theatrical.
A city in three frames.
One,
Two,
Three.
