“Thor’s Hammer”

Description:
Evening light falls across Thor’s Hammer, one of the most recognizable hoodoos in Bryce Canyon National Park. Rising along the Navajo Loop Trail, this formation draws hikers, photographers, and travelers seeking panoramic canyon views, colorful cliffs, and classic southern Utah red-rock scenery.

Story:
The hoodoo known as Thor’s Hammer stands silhouetted against a backdrop of color cast by the setting sun on an autumn evening in Bryce Canyon National Park.

Photographed just moments before the color vanished, I wanted to kick myself for almost missing the opportunity.

Earlier, I had given up hope that the sunset would be spectacular. Instead of staying put, I continued down the steep trail. By the time the sky began to glow, I was already at the bottom of a series of switchbacks. With the vigor of being in my twenties, I charged back up to the spot I had previsualized earlier.

With my tripod barely assembled and my hands shaking from the sprint, I took several photographs and hoped none of them were blurry.
