“The Dorys”

Description:
Photographed in Pacific City, Oregon, this image captures the return of dory boats to shore near Cape Kiwanda, where fishermen and charter crews guide their vessels through the surf. The scene highlights Pacific City’s distinctive surf-launching tradition, a defining aspect of Oregon Coast maritime culture.

Story:
A morning spent exploring and photographing the tide pools of Pacific City gave me the perfect vantage point to watch the dory boats return after their sunrise launch. One by one they came in, sounding their horns to warn beachgoers as they approached at full speed. Standing on the rocks that form the tide pools, I was able to capture a view that feels almost like the perspective of a surfer waiting for a wave.

Every third weekend of July, the annual Dory Days Festival takes place, celebrating the long and unique fishing heritage of Pacific City.
