“Synchronous”

Description:
Photographed from Fallsview Park in Saint John, New Brunswick, this black-and-white landscape captures the dramatic contrast of a rocky island in the Saint John River against the backdrop of the Irving Pulp & Paper Mill, its chimneys releasing plumes of steam into the midday sky.

Story:
My AirBnB host in Saint John, New Brunswick strongly recommended I visit here to see. I did so on the day I was heading back to the United States after my impromptu visit to Canada after photographing the April 8th total solar eclipse in Maine.

Saint John is part of the Bay of Fundy and is known for a natural tide phenomena unique to the city called “Reversing Falls”. The AirBnB host recommended I visit Fallsview Park which is at the top of the falls since he thought that would be the best place to photograph. Ideally, I would have visited during high tide when the water goes from left to right, but I didn’t have a choice with my schedule.

However, I must say that I am quite pleased with what I discovered during my visit. I noticed immediately that the white water created by the falls and the steam billowing from the paper mill’s chimneys were echoing each other. And the island reminded me of a profile view of a bird or airplane wing which made the whole scene resemble a natural visual demonstration in aerodynamics.
