“Stella Falls”

Description:
Located along the Little Nestucca River on Highway 130, Stella Falls is best photographed in spring when rain and snowmelt from the Coast Range keep the river full. The origins of the rock modifications and broken fish ladder are unclear, but European-American settlement in this area began in the 1870s, likely influencing early river alterations.

Story:
The Little Nestucca River, swollen after a recent rain, splits around large basalt blocks and drops through a series of natural staircases before rejoining downstream.

Stella Falls is well known among local fishermen, who gather just beyond the bend to cast for trout and salmon. I only discovered the falls recently while driving the scenic highway looking for photogenic spots along the river. Since 1993, when I was a child, I’ve traveled this road countless times on the way to Pacific City — yet I had never noticed this waterfall, despite it sitting right beside the highway.

A fish run hugs one side of the falls, and the broken ladder on the central rock formation hints at earlier attempts to modify the flow. Information about these structures is scarce, but they were likely tied to early homesteading efforts in the decades before electricity reached this part of the Coast Range.

Besides locals and fishermen, the occasional whitewater kayaker knows about Stella Falls, but I think it deserves far more attention from photographers. The elongated shape of the cascade, combined with the curving river in the background, gives the scene a three-dimensional depth not found at typical vertical-drop waterfalls.

Totally underrated.
