“Starburst Reflection”

Description:
A dramatic sunset at low tide radiates with warmth as Haystack Rock and Cape Kiwanda reflect in the sand. Photographed from Pacific City, Oregon. This beach is known for surfing, whale watching, and dory fishing. It sits along the Three Capes Scenic Route, roughly halfway between Tillamook and Lincoln City.

Story:
A sunset at Pacific City exceeded all expectations and delivered a vivid display of color.

The forecast had called for clear skies, and I confirmed the conditions through the webcam at the Inn at Cape Kiwanda before leaving my home in the valley. But weather along the Oregon coast can shift quickly. Clouds often form along the horizon as sunset approaches, and more often than not they swallow the sun before it reaches the water.

For this photograph, the timing worked in my favor. The clouds added texture and depth to the sky without blocking the light. As the tide receded, it left behind a reflective sheen on the sand, creating a mirror that doubled the colors above.

When the sun aligned with the arch of Haystack Rock, it burst through in a perfect moment of light.
