“Spray”

Description:
Pacific rhododendrons bloom each spring in the coastal redwood forests of northern California, their bright pink clusters contrasting with the towering trunks around them. Found along fog-drenched slopes and roadsides, these native shrubs thrive in filtered light, adding bursts of color to the ancient groves of Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park.

Story:
Wild rhododendrons bloom along Highway 101 in Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park.

Rhodies: pink and vibrant. Pearls of the redwoods. From late May into early June, you can find them scattered through the forest.

In 2021, intermittent road closures created a rare gift. With Highway 101 temporarily blocked for landslide cleanup, the usual rush of cars disappeared. The wind from passing vehicles — the constant force that sends the flowers into chaotic motion — was gone. Instead of dancing wildly, the blossoms held still, poised and ready for the camera.

All the photographs from this period carry floral names: Bouquet, Spray, Veil. Each chosen for the shape and mood of the composition — the quiet interplay between rhododendron and redwood.
