“Solitude at Lee Falls”

Description:
Photographed in spring, Lee Falls on the Tualatin River is a popular local swimming hole tucked behind the town of Cherry Grove, Oregon. Named for 19th-century sawmill owner James A. Lee, the waterfall is unusual for the region in being wider than it is tall. Access to the falls is only possible on foot or bicycle to the general public due to the falls being located near the Hillsboro Reservoir.

Stroy:
The Tualatin River spills over Lee Falls, a wide curtain of water hidden in the foothills of the coast range.

I was balanced on a pair of half-submerged rocks with my tripod extended low over the water, the sound of the falls drowning out everything else. A can of bear spray hung from my hip — a local had warned me that black bears occasionally wander the area — so I kept checking over my shoulder as I composed the shot.

Clouds drifted overhead, shifting between bright sun and soft shade. Like most photographers, I prefer waterfalls under cloud cover: sunlight blows out the water and deepens the shadows. So I took a few test shots, kept one eye on the sky, and waited for a passing cloud to give me the light I needed.

I hadn’t even heard of Lee Falls until a week earlier, when I took my Honda CR-V in for service. One of the employees, after learning I was a landscape photographer, mentioned he lived near the falls. He warned me that parking at the gate could get my car towed, then offered his driveway instead. I accepted the offer and returned the next time the weather looked promising.

When the clouds lined up, I drove the thirty minutes from Newberg to tiny Cherry Grove, then pedaled my mountain bike along the dirt road that follows the Tualatin River. This spot is apparently packed with swimmers and cliff-jumpers in summer, but on a weekday in mid-May, it was just me, the river, and the sound of water echoing through the canyon.
