“Seoye”
Description:
This photograph shows Lotte World Tower in Seoul as viewed from the Gangbyeon Techno Mart Sky Park. Completed in 2016, the 123-story skyscraper is by far South Korea’s tallest building and a landmark of modern engineering, symbolizing the country’s rapid urban growth and global architectural ambition.
Story:
Lotte World Tower, the dominating skyscraper, completed during my three-year stay in South Korea as an ESL teacher, reminds me of a fountain pen. It’s a symbol of South Korea’s past and present: a continual focus on education and growth.
Poetry is a traditional art form in Korea, composed through calligraphy. The term “seoye” means Korean calligraphy and is a tradition introduced from China thousands of years ago. While a brush is typically used, a fountain pen is a modern tool that I think is fitting of Korea’s largest building.
A calligraphy nib of light and glass,
Lotte Tower rises:
Korea’s ambition poised to write
another poem in the sky.
