“Sandstone Swirl”
Description:
Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City is one of the few sandstone capes on the Oregon Coast. This sunrise photograph showcases its sculpted shapes, layered textures, and soft morning color beside the Pacific Ocean. A vivid look at the geology that makes this headland so distinctive.
Story:
Clouds glow with color as a new day begins at Cape Kiwanda. Unlike many of the basalt capes along the Oregon coast, this one is made entirely of sandstone. Wind, water, and time have carved it into curves and contours that feel almost sculpted by hand. For a photographer, it is a buffet of patterns and surprises.
“Sandstone Swirl” was a photograph I discovered while scouting for the “Dragon’s Tail”. I had come for another composition, but this swirl of color caught my eye the moment I stepped near it.
Sandstone carries an incredible palette. Browns blend into orange and gray, and in this scene those tones rise to meet the soft pinks and purples of the morning clouds. Even the blue sky becomes part of the harmony.
