“Reflections (BW)”

Description:
Photographed during a calm low tide at sunrise, this iconic view captures Cannon Beach’s 235-foot basalt sea stack, Haystack Rock, mirrored across the wet shoreline. The formation stands on the ancestral lands of the Clatsop and Tillamook peoples and remains one of the most visited natural features on the Oregon Coast.

Story:
Nearing the summer solstice, the morning sun illuminates the iconic northwestern face of Cannon Beach’s Haystack Rock. Because the beach is so flat, a low tide transforms the wet sand into a mirror-like surface that reflects the sky with the clarity of a calm lake. In moments like this, Haystack Rock appears almost surrounded by blue and cloud on every side.

A flurry of activity unfolded near the rock as shorebirds began to hunt. Some gathered in the vegetation atop the monolith, while others circled overhead, preparing to dive for their morning meal.

People, too, were beginning to stir. Early beachgoers wandered toward the tidepools at the base of the rock, eager to explore on this beautiful spring morning.
