“Rainbow Horses”

Description:
A vivid rainbow rises over horses grazing outside Idaho Falls. Set along the corridor between Grand Teton National Park and Pocatello, this region mixes irrigated Snake River farmland with high-desert ecology, where fast-moving storm systems create dramatic light and atmospheric displays across southeastern Idaho’s open plains.

Story:
Horses dash with energy during a spectacular rainbow in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

The real magic of this photo is all in the timing.

Totally unexpected.
Totally unplanned.

It happened while driving from Grand Teton National Park to Pocatello, Idaho.

The sun was close to setting just outside of Idaho Falls when this brilliantly rich rainbow appeared. Realizing how fleeting this opportunity was, I frantically checked my surroundings to see if there was anything of interest to compliment this rainbow.

There wasn’t much — just endless fields on either side of the road. But up ahead on the left, a few horses were grazing. I pulled over, crossed the road, and hurried to set up my camera and tripod. Surprised by my presence, the horses wandered closer out of curiosity. Then, just as suddenly, they bolted — giving me the photograph I never could have planned for.
