“Rainbow Grove”
Description:
Photographed near Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, California, this rainbow spans a historic palm grove weathering a post-storm clearing. These palms, introduced widely in the early 1900s, help define the region’s classic coastal silhouette along Orange County’s waterfront.
Story:
A rainbow at Newport Beach, California arches over a stand of palm trees.
Even while on vacation, I feel the need to create and explore. I had spent most of the day wandering Disneyland and wanted to do something different, so I left the park and drove to the beach in time for sunset.
I thought there might be a chance for a gorgeous sky after the storm that had passed through earlier — something I could photograph using Balboa Pier as a focal point. But as I walked from my car toward the shoreline, a rainbow unexpectedly appeared, almost as if summoned by the photography gods.
Immediately I began searching for something to complement it, but I was standing in the middle of a parking lot. All around me were cars, asphalt and… palm trees.
Noticing three palms lined up by height, I shifted my position until the rainbow appeared to strike the one in the middle and zoomed my lens to create what became the artwork “Chosen One.” Then I stepped back and zoomed out to take in the full arch. Palm trees rose everywhere around me despite standing on pavement; it felt surreal, almost like stumbling into a rainbow grove.
And the sunset I had been hoping for? It wasn’t anything I could photograph. The skies cleared completely, leaving nothing for the light to ignite. A dud of a sunset — though the rainbow more than made up for it.
