“Radiant Rock”

Description:
Haystack Rock (Chief Kiawanda Rock) near Pacific City, Oregon is shown at sunset, silhouetted against a gradient sky. This sea stack, part of the Nestucca Formation, is a prominent landmark along the northern Oregon Coast. The photograph highlights the rock’s basalt structure and its position along the shoreline of Tierra Del Mar.

Story:
Haystack Rock off the coast of Pacific City rises as an angular black shape against a tapestry of color in this minimalist photograph made at sunset on a clear, cool, and calm evening.

In silhouette, Haystack Rock becomes a solid dark form that seems to project upward with tremendous force. The colors around it carry that sense of power. The orange and red glow of sunset slowly fades to a pale sky blue near the top of the frame, giving the rock an almost mystical presence.

To me the rock feels like a symbol of natural strength, even something supernatural. From what I understand, the Indigenous people of this area were the Kiwanda or Kiawanda Indians, and the basalt formation was known to them as Chief Kiawanda. It is easy to imagine they might have seen a similar sunset and felt the same sense of awe.
