“Proposal Rock”
Description:
Low tide in the winter reveals the petrified stumps of the Neskowin ghost forest with Proposal Rock in the background. Photographed after sunset during blue hour, Neskowin is a popular vacation destination in south Tillamook County known for its charming cottages and golf course.
Story:
Low tide at Neskowin reveals the petrified stumps that guide the eye toward Proposal Rock in the distance.
These ancient trees, buried under tons of sand after the catastrophic earthquake of 1700, reappeared during the winter of 1997–1998. I was seven years old at the time and didn’t join my parents or grandmother when they visited the newly uncovered stumps, though I remember their excitement.
Proposal Rock is said to be named for a couple who were engaged there over a century ago, a small story woven into the larger history of this place.
This photograph was taken in winter, when a seasonal river flows across the beach. It disappears during the drier summer months, but in winter it becomes an unavoidable obstacle. The water was high and the current stronger than it looked. I nearly slipped while crossing back to my car. If I had fallen, this photograph might not have survived — nor my camera.
