“Prized Possession”

Description:
Pacific City features an open, walkable beach shaped by tides, wind, and seasonal swells. The sandstone headlands of Cape Kiwanda and nearby Haystack Rock create sheltered intertidal zones where visitors often observe seabirds, marine invertebrates, and changing reflections across the wet sand.

Story:
A juvenile gull shows off a starfish clutched in its beak at Pacific City.

This cute little guy totally photobombed my composition as I tried capturing the pinkish early morning light glowing in the clouds. I had seen him coming… but I didn’t expect this.

As adorable as he was, I had already watched how he acquired his prized possession. While chasing another gull through the air, our bird knocked the starfish loose from its previous owner. It cartwheeled through the sky… spinning… tumbling… before plopping onto the ground right in front of my camera.

Sometimes nature gives you a moment you never planned for… and this was one of them.
