“Pastel Thoughts”

Description:
Haystack Rock (Chief Kiawanda Rock), a basalt sea stack off Pacific City, Oregon, is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and closed to public access. This image captures the formation after sunset from Bob Straub State Park under pastel coastal light shaped by marine clouds and calm surf.

Story:
Calm waters, blue clouds, and pastel red skies are punctuated by Haystack Rock in the fading light after sunset.

The rock anchors my thoughts. The clouds echo my emotions. The sky reveals what the day left unsaid. Sunset is usually a time when the world winds down and the mind begins to settle.

But that evening was anything but quiet. A couple hundred people were gathered nearby for the Fourth of July fireworks at Bob Straub State Park. There was drinking, dancing, laughing, and the kind of summer chaos that fills the shoreline.

Yet when I look at this photograph, I do not think about the noise. I think about the moment itself and the stillness it carried inside me. The image holds the symbolism more than the scene around it.

Pastel Thoughts.
