“Pastel Ocean”
Description:
This abstract photograph was created using intentional camera movement along the Oregon Coast. The soft pastel bands reflect pre-sunrise atmospheric conditions, including the Earth’s shadow and the Belt of Venus, which produce gradients of blue, lavender, and peach over the Pacific shoreline.
Story:
Before sunrise along the Oregon Coast, the colors begin quietly, more like watercolor than daylight. On this morning the sky shifted through soft gradients of peach, lavender, and blue as the Earth’s shadow and the Belt of Venus rose along the western horizon. As I moved the camera with intention, those colors settled into gentle horizontal bands.
This wasn’t a literal view of the ocean so much as the colorful impression the morning light left behind. Pastel tones took the place of detail, and motion replaced form, creating a scene that feels present and alive.
Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) reduces the landscape to its simplest shapes, letting color become the primary narrative. In Pastel Ocean, the transition from night to day is expressed not through the rising sun, but through the soft atmospheric hues that define a quiet coastal dawn.
