“Oregon Sahara”
Description:
Wind-shaped sand dunes rise beneath a clear sky in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. These shifting coastal dunes near Lakeside, Oregon form one of North America’s largest temperate dune systems, attracting hikers, photographers, and explorers to the sweeping landscapes of the John Dellenback Dunes trail.
Story:
A large sand dune in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area evokes a sense of solitude, clarity and restoration.
The sand siphoning between my toes made each footstep feel like a spa treatment. It was cool to the touch underfoot, yet warm as the grains slid across the tops of my feet in the heat of the afternoon sun.
Standing atop one of the dunes, I could see the ocean at the very edge of my sight. I used the height to reorient myself in this Saharan-like landscape that was much larger than I had imagined.
Upon descending one of the larger dunes, the ocean vanished — replaced with sand stretching as far as the eye could see.
