”Old Red Barn”

Description:
A weathered red barn stands at the end of vineyard rows in the foothills of Newberg, Oregon. Set among Oregon white oaks in the Chehalem Mountains AVA, this scene captures the region’s wine-country landscape: young grapevines, volcanic soils, and the rustic agricultural history of the Willamette Valley.

Story:
A deteriorating old red barn sits at the end of a young vineyard nestled among oak trees in the foothills of Newberg, Oregon.

How long will this barn last? Does it still serve any purpose? Those questions came to mind every time I passed this vineyard on my bicycle — either coasting downhill on Aspen Way or grinding slowly uphill in the opposite direction.

Owned by Foothills Vineyard, the barn has a certain character and charm. It felt deserving of a photograph. So on the last sunny, blue-sky day of autumn, I drove to Aspen Way and parked along the sloping gravel shoulder beside the vineyard. A section of welded wire mesh fencing created just enough space for my lens to slip through.

I aligned the vineyard rows until the old barn sat perfectly centered. As it turned out, this would be the last autumn to photograph it — the barn collapsed during the following winter.
