“Moonstruck”
Description:
Located in the Three Sisters Wilderness near Bend, Oregon, Ball Butte sits along the scenic Broken Top Loop, a favorite route for backpackers. Alpine meadows, cold streams, and wide views of volcanic peaks define the area. Clear summer nights often reveal bright moonrises that illuminate the high-country landscape.
Story:
A full moon rises above Ball Butte near Broken Top in the Three Sisters Wilderness of central Oregon.
Camping underneath moonlight is like camping under a streetlamp. The thin fabric of your tent does little to block the light. You wake up in the middle of the night thinking it’s already dawn, only to check your phone and realize it’s 2 a.m.
Our location for the night put us in an alpine meadow near a stream fed by snowmelt. The moonlight reflected in the water while I illuminated my tent using a green light on my headlamp suspended inside.
Part of a series of photographs taken on the 25-mile Broken Top Loop in mid-July, this was our one and only opportunity to photograph at night. The next day, smoke filtered in and turned the sky opaque.
