“Medieval Tallinn”
Description:
Golden hour light sweeps across the iconic spires, fortified stone watchtowers, and red-tiled roofs of Tallinn’s UNESCO-listed Old Town. Captured from the Patkuli Viewing Platform on Toompea Hill, “Medieval Tallinn” frames the dramatic contrast of ancient medieval architecture against the Baltic Sea, bathed in the rich, lingering glow of late spring twilight in Estonia.
Story:
I stayed in the heart of Tallinn for three nights with a friend from the USA, and had come to this exact location two times before: the day we arrived, the second day, and for this photograph, the last day. My friend was working remotely in the hotel room while I explored the city with my camera.
I discovered online and confirmed in person that this is arguably the most picturesque scene of Tallinn. Accessing this spot meant a 10-minute walk from our place and a climb up a set of stairs to a viewing platform on Cathedral Hill (“Toompea” in Estonian). I returned her to take a photo again and again to fine tune my composition and pray for an interesting sky.
One thing the photo doesn’t capture, except for the person on the sidewalk in the bottom right corner of the photograph, is how cold it was during our stay in Estonia. The wind chill brought temperatures in line with winter in the Pacific Northwest. The clothes I had packed to wear at 10,000 feet of elevation in the Swiss Alps came in handy here!
