“Malibu Sunset”

Description:
Sunset colors illuminate Carbon Beach in Malibu, California, a shoreline long bordered by private estates and public access disputes. Adjacent to Pacific Coast Highway, completed in the late 1920s, this stretch of coast became known as “Billionaire’s Beach” for its high-value homes and tightly regulated coastal access.

Story:
A stretch of beach in Malibu is bathed in the last light of the day, the shoreline glowing gold as the sun drops toward the horizon. This photograph wasn’t planned. I had been wandering along Carbon Beach, reached only by a narrow public access walkway tucked between multimillion-dollar homes, when the light suddenly turned extraordinary.

As an Oregonian, I’m used to a coastline that belongs to everyone, open at all hours. Malibu is different. Curfews, gated walkways, and slivers of access feel unusual — almost fragile. With sunset approaching and the beach minutes away from closing, most people had already left.

For a brief moment, it felt as if the beach belonged entirely to the rocks, the waves, and the warm light sweeping across them.

I stayed just long enough to capture the day’s final glow: a true Malibu sunset.
