“Layer Cake”
Description:
Stacked bands of fiery amber, soft coral, deep indigo, and violet paint the sky and still waters of Lake Nummijärvi during the height of the Finnish midnight sun. Divided only by the silhouetted tree line of the distant shore, “Layer Cake” captures the surreal, painterly gradients of a Scandinavian summer twilight that lingers long past midnight.
Story:
It was another one of those days where we spent the day exploring, fishing, and doing Finnish things like going in the buff to the sauna. As we brushed our teeth and the mosquitos came out to play, the wind died and the lake became like glass.
A rainbow of layers without green appeared. The scene was full of reds, yellows, oranges, blues, indigos and violets layered on top of one another with the dark salty licorice (salmiakki) band of the lake horizon dividing a world of air and water. It was feast for the eyes! Sweet dreams.
