“Horsetail Falls (Winter)”
Description:
Photographed from beneath Highway 30, Horsetail Falls in the Columbia River Gorge is the last major waterfall visible from the Historic Columbia River Highway before it reconnects with Interstate 84 near Dodson. When the Eagle Creek Fire tore through the Gorge in September 2017, this waterfall was miraculously spared.
Story:
Constantly carving into the basalt beneath it, Horsetail Falls shows no sign of slowing her galloping pace — even in the grip of winter.
This was my first time photographing the falls, though I’d visited many times as a hiker long before I picked up a camera. My favorite trail in the Gorge used to begin nearby. The Eagle Creek Fire destroyed that trail, but somehow left this waterfall untouched.
This was one of those rare winters when snow fell both in the Willamette Valley and throughout the Gorge. I’m cautious about driving in snow, so I waited until the roads were clear before driving the 90 minutes from home into the heart of the canyon.
Most people don’t recognize Horsetail Falls from this angle — photographed from beneath the Historic Columbia River Highway bridge. Highway 30 curves in front of the waterfall and gives its own iconic viewpoints, but I’ve always leaned toward solitude. You’ll find that under the bridge. Just don’t expect silence — the waterfall thunders like a thousand hooves.
