Description:
This photograph shows Heceta Head Lighthouse on Oregon’s central coast surrounded by coastal fog. Built in 1894 and positioned 205 feet above the Pacific Ocean, the lighthouse overlooks Heceta Head and Cape Creek. The image highlights typical marine fog conditions along this stretch of the Oregon shoreline.
Story:
Fog wrapped around the sea and cliffs until the lighthouse at Heceta Head appeared to float above the landscape, shining through the haze as if it stood on an island in the clouds.
Powerful swells pounded the rocks and shoreline, sending spray into the air. The wind held the mist in place instead of carrying it away, allowing the fog to thicken and build. These conditions created the surreal effect of the lighthouse suspended above the shifting white veil.
Before arriving, I had envisioned a completely different photograph. I wanted to capture waves crashing at the base of the cliff, but each passing minute brought heavier fog and visibility continued to disappear. The scene changed, and I had to change with it.
Far below, I could hear sea lions barking through the haze even though I could not see them.
While photographing, I caught myself imagining what it would feel like to be out at sea during conditions like this, when the shoreline is hidden and the swells are violent. In that moment, the lighthouse, rising above the fog, felt like the only guide someone could rely on. It felt like hope.
