“Hope”

Story:
Fog envelopes the sea and cliffs as the lighthouse of Heceta Head continues to shine through as if it were on an island in the clouds.

Powerful swells pounded the rocks, cliff and shoreline, producing a cloud of mist that continued to build up as the wind kept it from dispersing. This created the mystical conditions for this photograph of the lighthouse appearing through the salty fog.

Originally, I had envisioned a different photograph prior to coming to this location. I had thought I could capture the waves crashing at the base of the cliff. But with every passing moment, the fog only thickened.

Sounds of barking sea lions could be heard echoing off the sides of the cliff. I couldn’t see them through the dense air.

While photographing, I stopped to wonder what it would be like to sail in the ocean during this time when the swells were violent and the rocky shoreline obscured. I bet this lighthouse, visible above the fog, would be my best hope for survival.
