“Heidelberg”
Description:
Seoul skyline viewed from Namhansan Fortress’ West Gate Observatory, looking northwest toward Lotte World Tower. Seoul, founded over 2,000 years ago along the Han River, is South Korea’s capital and largest city, blending ancient history with modern architecture, technology, and rapid urban development.
Story:
I suffered a back injury just before my trip in the middle of October to see South Korea for the first time in five years since leaving the country after teaching ESL there from 2015 to 2018. I had planned to bring my Nikon DSLR and two lenses. My goal for the trip was to retrace familiar sights and chase autumn foliage around the country. I visited for 4 weeks. But this trip was far from that.
Having purchased an iPhone 15 Pro in September, and used only my phone to capture images — leaving the Nikon at home. The results that I came away with were not what I wanted because my back continued to be sore despite lightening my gear. Also, I was shocked at how emotional the trip became.
When I left Korea in 2018, my grandmother was still alive. The day I took this photograph, I had cried on the trail leading to this viewpoint. It felt like I could still call her or reach out to her. It felt like 5 years hadn’t passed and it was still 2018: instead of coming home, I had renewed my teaching contract for another year.
