“Heidelberg”
Description:
Warm late-afternoon sunlight illuminates the iconic red-sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle perched above the historic Altstadt. Captured from the high elevation of Philosopher’s Walk (Philosophenweg), “Heidelberg” offers a classic panorama featuring the Old Bridge spanning the Neckar River, the spire of the Church of the Holy Spirit, and the lush, forested hillsides of southwestern Germany.
Story:
Heidelberg is a city I first got to know on my 2026 trip to Europe. Dad had been stationed here in the US Army during the early 70s and fell in love with the city. The reason I came here was to see the place with my own eyes. The army barracks he lived in had been removed and the land repurposed, but the old town, Heidelberg Altstadt, was the same as it ever was.
The best views of the old town were on the Philosopher’s Walk (Philosophenweg) — a paved trail that steadily climbs up the side of Heiligenberg mountain. It was a beautiful late spring afternoon with seasonable temperatures. Not too hot, nor too cold. I was in shorts and a t-shirt and trying out my new sandals I had bought for this trip. In fact, it felt like I was the ONLY one in shorts and sandals that day.
I can see why my dad fell in love with Heidelberg. The place has a lot of character. The layout of the old town feels harmonious and organic. If I could choose one photograph to describe Heidelberg, it would be this one.
