“Guarding The Way”
Description:
A Joshua tree stands before the sandstone cliffs of Red Rock Canyon near Las Vegas, Nevada. Photographed from Highway 159, this view highlights Mojave Desert vegetation, Jurassic Aztec Sandstone, and the rugged canyons shaped by erosion and faulting. Storm clouds from tropical moisture created rare overcast conditions in this arid landscape.
Story:
A Joshua tree guards an army of desert shrubs marching toward a gulley in the red rock canyon.
The air was charged with electricity. Thunderstorms were building, ready to sweep through and quench the thirst of the Joshua tree and its foot soldiers. This unusual weather was the result of tropical storm Sergio spinning up from Baja.
Sergio’s presence had pushed me to advance my trip earlier than planned. I missed out on a few other opportunities, but it placed me here at the perfect moment to photograph storm clouds gathering over this red rock desert.
