“Guardian (1)”

Description:
Hood River sits along the Oregon shore of the Columbia River, just north of Mount Hood, the state’s tallest stratovolcano. Founded in 1895, the town is a major Columbia River Gorge destination for dining, wind sports, and mountain access, with Mount Hood rising prominently behind it.

Story:
Evening settled over Hood River as Mount Hood caught the last blush of alpenglow. The town eased into night — lights flickering on, the river like glass — while I stood across the Columbia on the Washington side, watching it all unfold.

Looking south toward Hood River, I didn’t just see a mountain. I saw the presence of something ancient and spiritual rising above the town like a guardian. The longer I watched, the more the scene felt less like a landscape and more like a quiet relationship: a community living at the foot of a mountain that has watched over generations.

A shepherd and its flock.
A god and its people.
A sentinel standing watch.
