“Greenhouse”

Description:
An abandoned building along NE Quarry Road in Newberg, Oregon sits beneath moss-laden oaks and spring vegetation reclaiming the structure. Nestled in the Chehalem Mountains, this scene reflects the region’s mixed woodlands, volcanic soils, and temperate climate: a quiet intersection of rural history and natural renewal in the Willamette Valley.

Story:
New spring vegetation slowly reclaims a derelict building along NE Quarry Road, photographed at dawn in early May.

The concept behind this image is a simple contrast: life and death side by side. I found this scene while riding my bicycle into the Chehalem Mountains, gradually pushing myself farther each week along a route with minimal traffic.

With the abandoned building representing death and the fresh vegetation symbolizing life, Greenhouse reflects how the past and present stay interconnected in quiet, beautiful ways.

My grandmother had died five months earlier, and it was still the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. This photograph became a symbol of what I felt then — that I had crossed a threshold from the ignorance of youth into a clearer awareness of mortality.
