“Grace”

Description:
Photographed just before sunrise in Tillamook Bay near Garibaldi, Oregon, this image features one of the Three Graces sea stacks rising from calm coastal waters. A leafless tree crowned with seabirds stands against a pastel sky, blending rugged Oregon Coast geology with tranquil morning light and color.

Story:
I stepped quietly out of the house on a crisp and clear November morning on the Oregon Coast and drove fifty minutes north to a turnout along Highway 101 known as the Three Graces. The road was completely dark since I wanted to arrive before dawn and set up in time to catch the colors that appear before sunrise.

I am not a morning person unless I am chasing a moment in nature. Cold mornings feel magical to me because the chill is invigorating. As my grandfather used to say, “Puts hair on my chest.”

I came to photograph the Three Graces because high tide, calm water, and clear skies were all lining up at sunrise. Using a neutral density filter allowed me to smooth the water while keeping motion in the flock of birds resting in the dead tree. I love how the tree may be gone, yet it still provides shelter and life.
