“Golden Valley (BW)”

Description:
A collapsing barn stands beside a wheat field along Kuehne Road near Newberg, Oregon, illuminated by sunrise in the Chehalem Mountains foothills. This rural Yamhill County landscape reflects the region’s agricultural history, rolling volcanic soils, early-summer harvest patterns, and the mix of farms and forest typical of the Willamette Valley.

Story:
A derelict barn rests along the side of Kuehne Road in a field of wheat during sunrise on the Fourth of July.

The hay had been cut a couple of weeks prior, but the wheat was still maturing — its blonde stalks glowing gold under the first light of day. The wind was dead calm, the sky a rich blue, and only the occasional car passed by. It was a peaceful morning, one I shared with no one except the birds.

A few days earlier, I was driving home to Newberg from a physical therapy appointment in McMinnville — taking a detour due to construction on 99W — when the barn and the wheat caught my eye. Both seemed ready to be cut: the wheat by a combine, and the barn by the wind.
