“Golden Gate Splash”
Description:
Located in the Presidio, Baker Beach overlooks the Golden Gate Bridge, a 1937 engineering landmark chosen for its International Orange color to stand out in fog. The beach offers visitors a broad and sandy Pacific shoreline, views of the Marin Headlands, and a classic San Francisco experience.
Story:
A wave breaks over the rocks at Baker Beach during a sunset on a late October evening.
The sun had already dipped below the horizon before the right “splash” occurred. This proved to be to my advantage, for in that moment the whole scene was bathed in a warm red afterglow, echoing the color of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Setting up for this photograph was tricky. I sunk my tripod into the sand to anchor it and steadied the camera. My shoes were resting farther up the beach next to several pieces of driftwood — well away from any wave. I was prepared to do what it took to get the shot.
As wave after wave washed ashore, my feet and legs would periodically be submerged in the biting cold of the Pacific, and my tripod — despite being stuck in dry sand — shifted as the waves reached it.
Many times I had to reset my composition, but I felt like I was in my element. All my concentration was on recording the right moment.
