“Gold and Green”

Description:
Sunrise lights a farmhouse and frost-covered vineyards along McDougall Road in the Chehalem Mountains near Dundee and Newberg, Oregon. This Willamette Valley landscape features volcanic Jory soils, cool-season agriculture, mixed vineyards, early-winter frost patterns, and the rolling foothills typical of Oregon wine country.

Story:
Light from sunrise illuminates a farmhouse and vineyards off McDougall Road after the first hard frost of the season, turning the hills into bands of gold and green.

It was bitterly cold — the kind of cold that turns your ears pink and makes you sniff back the mucus ready to drip from your Rudolph-red nose. Mud in the shape of tire tracks was frozen beneath my boots. I was set up at the end of a gravel driveway next to the edge of a large field, my camera and tripod resting on frostbitten earth as hard as cement.

Behind me, across McDougall Road, a chimney was billowing smoke from a wood stove. Commuters occasionally passed by on their way toward 99W. Clouds overhead glowed pink and orange with the rising sun, while the vineyard rows shifted from shadowed green to bright gold as the light crept across the hillside. I stood waiting for that moment when the sun would finally warm the scene in this photograph.

It was the first hard frost of the season — and the world was waiting to thaw.
