“Gnarled Glory”

Story:
On a foggy Wednesday morning, the fall colors of a Japanese maple are in full display.

Long lines form every autumn to photograph this one tree. It’s rumored to be one of the most photographed trees in the world – and for very good reason! It’s an elegant example of a tree that has been meticulously cultivated and pruned to show off its natural beauty.

This Japanese maple inspires throngs of photographers to travel far and wide to photograph it.

Every photographer gets 15 minutes of fame with this stately autumn monarch in a self-guided and slowly moving line that gives you only a few moments to get your shot before shuffling a few more inches to have another go.

It’s a high-pressure situation for such a serene scene.

I enjoyed photographing the tree in large part because of the pressure. The pressure helped me to concentrate on one thing: photography. There wasn’t much room for experimenting or fine tuning the composition. Quick decisions had to be made.

Autumn Monarch. King of the moment. Emperor of color.

Gnarled glory.
