“Gimmelwald (Pano)”

Perched high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, the car-free mountain hamlet of Gimmelwald sits nestled beneath the towering, snow-capped peaks of the Bernese Oberland. In “Gimmelwald,” late afternoon sunlight breaks through drifting alpine clouds to spotlight the rustic timber chalets and lush meadow slopes, set against sheer granite cliffs and cascading snowmelt waterfalls.
Story:
Today was my birthday and I was here to revisit a place I fell in love with exactly 12 years ago. Except back then I only had two nights to explore the area and this time I had four. However, the funny thing about this trip is not what I did with those four nights, but what I didn’t do.
12 years ago, I hiked all around and took the first cable car of the day, on my birthday, to the top of the Schilthorn and had a meal in the revolving restaurant. This time around, 12 years later, I took a slower pace, sticking mostly to the hostel and wandering the scenic paths nearby while taking cable car rides to the top in the afternoon.
It was on this birthday walk through Gimmelwald that I came upon this scene. Standing on a road overlooking the entire village with the Swiss Alps jutting into the air and waterfalls of snowmelt cascading down the vertical granite slopes, the clouds parted to isolate the village of Gimmelwald in golden sunlight. The moment felt like a birthday gift.
