“Gatekeeper’s Code”

Description:
Harris Beach State Park offers visitors numerous basalt sea stacks to view and explore. Photographed during low tide at sunset, Harris Beach is a sand beach located next to Brookings, Oregon on the southern Oregon Coast near the California state border.

Story:
During sunset on a clear autumn evening, the sun cast an orange glow across the rocky shores of Harris Beach State Park as the tide slipped through a narrow opening in the rock.

To my imagination, that opening is a gate. Twice a day the ocean enters or exits through it, as reliably as a ritual. People can pass through as well, but only if they know the code.

The gatekeeper’s code is written in the sky — a quiet agreement between the sun and the moon that governs the tide.

To know the code is simply to know the tide
