“Garden of the Gods”

Description:
Garden of the Gods is one of Colorado’s most popular outdoor destinations, famous for its soaring red sandstone walls and accessible trails. This view from Juniper Loop Road captures the park’s dramatic fins and foothill vegetation, a landscape that invites visitors to explore, photograph, and enjoy the natural beauty just outside Colorado Springs.

Story:
Slabs of orange sandstone rise sharply from a mosaic of green. The sky can’t decide if it wants to be clear or cloudy on this mid-spring afternoon. Boardwalks wind through the formations and vegetation, giving visitors a way to feel small as they walk among giants.

This is the Garden of the Gods.

What you cannot see in the photograph are the cars parked behind me, the bicycle tours rolling through, and the steady flow of tourists taking pictures. I could not believe how busy it was.

Traveling from Amarillo, where I photographed “The Lighthouse” the previous evening, I arrived here mid-week in May and was surprised by the crowds. There is only one road through the park, and it is a single lane. My first pass was to scout a spot, the second was to look for parking, and only on the third try did I manage to get a space near this viewpoint. Altogether it took about thirty minutes of circling.

Yet photography is magical. Even when a place is crowded, the camera captures a scene in a fraction of a second and focuses attention on what everyone came to see: the nature and grandeur of Garden of the Gods.
