“Fractured Coast”
Description:
McPhillips Beach, the quieter stretch of shoreline at Cape Kiwanda, features sandstone cliffs shaped by constant erosion along Oregon’s northern coast. This summer image looks toward Anchor Rock and the cape’s weathered formations as waves break across the broad, drive-on beach just north of Pacific City and south of Tierra Del Mar.
Story:
Light from the afternoon sun backlights the ocean, turning the water a vivid green while the weathered sandstone cliffs of Cape Kiwanda rise in the distance.
This lesser-visited side of the cape has a beauty all its own.
Photographed in summer, when the sun sits higher and farther north, the light traced the edges of the sandstone in a way that made every curve feel sculpted by hand. Each wave rolling in seemed to glow from within, flashing an iridescent green the moment the sunlight met its crest.
With the timing just right, I caught a breaking wave whose arc mirrored the curve of the sandstone behind it — two forces echoing each other for only a heartbeat.
This photograph is one of several that feature the sandstone monolith I call Anchor Rock. You can see more of it in “Anchor Rock,” “Forbidden Way”, “Cathedral”, and “Breaking Rocks”.
