“Fairy Falls”

Description:
Located along the Wahkeena Trail, Fairy Falls is one of several waterfalls in Wahkeena Canyon within the Columbia River Gorge. Photographed in autumn, this 20-foot fan-shaped waterfall is easily accessed from the trail, rewarding hikers who make the steep climb with one of the most graceful waterfalls in the Gorge.

Story:
The fall colors of 2019 in Oregon were spectacular. A stretch of dry, sunny weather and minimal rain allowed the colors to fully develop. Even so, most of Oregon remains green in autumn — with the great exception of Big Leaf Maples, whose leaves added the perfect touch of color to this photograph.

Located about one mile and 900 vertical feet above the trailhead, I had this popular waterfall to myself for only a few minutes before a wave of hikers arrived for selfies.

Dressed in designer jeans and leather boots, I balanced on rocks in the shallows next to the falls. The delicate spray coated my camera lens, forcing me to wipe it between nearly every shot.

The forest carried that familiar autumn scent — damp earth mixed with the decay of leaves. The steady roar of the waterfall drowned out every stray thought as I worked to keep the lens streak-free.

Oregon is home to countless waterfalls, but Fairy Falls is easily a favorite thanks to its angelic shape.

I regretted hiking this in jeans.
