“Emerald Pool Falls”

Description:
Photographed in early fall, the Lower Emerald Pool in Zion National Park is considered the most photogenic of the three pools. At just a half-mile one way on a wheelchair-friendly path, it is also the most accessible. Zion National Park was established in 1919 under President Woodrow Wilson.

Story:
Recent rains created a temporary waterfall at the Lower Emerald Pools in Zion National Park.

During my visit, the remnants of Tropical Storm Sergio had swept through the region, producing a flash flood that brought the falls to life and turned the trail into reddish-brown mud. As I followed the path, climbing and dipping with the terrain, I kept wondering why so many people were on the trail. Solitude wasn’t in the cards today, but beauty certainly was.

The falls announced themselves before they came into view. The trail at this point winds through dense trees, and suddenly I was stopped behind a wall of visitors raising their phones toward the sound of rushing water. The contrast between the vivid green foliage and the warm sandstone cliffs was striking. Water spilled gently over the edge above and splashed into a pool tinted brown from the fresh runoff.

After hours of rain, wind, and flash-flood warnings, the calmness of this moment felt like a welcome pause: a brief and peaceful interlude carved out by the storm itself.
