“Earth Hammer (BW)”

Description:
Balanced Rock in Arches National Park, Utah rises about 128 feet. The formation consists of Entrada Sandstone atop softer Dewey Bridge mudstone. Over time, erosion will eventually cause the massive boulder to collapse. Balanced Rock is one of the park’s most iconic and frequently photographed landmarks.

Story:
Balanced Rock rises from the Utah desert like the head of a hammer sculpted by time itself. The upper boulder appears to have been lifted and set in place by some ancient force, poised between creation and collapse. Against the shifting sky, it feels less like an accident of erosion and more like intention: a tool forged by the planet to shape its own form.

I photographed it in dynamic afternoon light, where sculpted high clouds and the sun’s angle revealed the contrast between strength and fragility. The weight above seems impossible, yet it endures, as if reminding everything around it that balance is not stillness but tension held just long enough to become beautiful.

I titled this image “Earth Hammer” because it looks less like a rock in balance and more like a symbol of strength forged from the earth. Its shape suggests purpose rather than chance, as if the land itself had raised a monument to endure: power grounded in terra forma.
